Headphones Earpads

Ear pads are the part of headphones that comes into direct contact with the skin and has a significant effect on wearing comfort. When choosing a replacement part, focus primarily on exact compatibility, the attachment method, material, and shape. Similar dimensions or appearance alone do not mean that an ear pad will fit a particular model correctly. Also consider how it should be cleaned and how often you use your headphones.

Ear pads for comfortable headphone use

Worn, cracked, or deformed ear pads can reduce comfort and make it harder to keep headphones hygienically clean. Replacement also makes sense if the surface feels unpleasant, the padding remains compressed, or the ear pad is coming loose from the structure. Before ordering, however, check whether this part can be removed separately from your headphones and how it is attached.

When assessing comfort, do not look only at softness. The inner opening, depth, shape, and the way the ear pad contacts your head or ear are also important. With over-ear headphones, the ear should sit naturally inside the ear pad, while on-ear models rest directly on the outer ear. The right choice therefore depends on both the headphone design and your personal preferences.

What to check before choosing

  • Exact headphone model: the product range name may not be enough, so check the full model designation and any version.

  • Side and quantity: check whether the product is one ear pad, a pair, or a part intended only for a specific side.

  • Attachment method: the ear pad may fit over a rim, snap into a frame, be glued on, or be connected to a mounting ring.

  • Shape and orientation: round, oval, and asymmetrical ear pads cannot be interchanged based only on their approximate size.

  • External and internal dimensions: if compatibility is not explicitly stated, compare them with the original part and also account for depth.

  • Surface material: choose it according to skin contact, cleaning requirements, and the environment in which you use your headphones.

  • Condition of other parts: a damaged frame, mount, or ear cup may prevent the new part from being fitted correctly.

Comparison of ear pad materials

Surface material Contact characteristics Care What to keep in mind
Fabric Breathable surface with a soft feel Dirt may become trapped in the fibres Check whether it can be removed and what cleaning method is recommended
Velour Fine, soft-pile surface Requires gentle removal of dust and grease When choosing, check the material's sensitivity to moisture
Synthetic leather Smooth, easy-to-wipe surface Common dirt can be wiped off with a slightly damp cloth Watch for cracking, peeling, and damage to the joins
Genuine leather Smooth, natural surface Requires a method suitable for the specific type of leather Do not use a cleaning product without checking that it is suitable
Combined material Different materials on the contact, outer, and inner sections Each section may require different care Follow the requirements of the material on the particular surface you are cleaning

Replacing ear pads without damage

Before removal, inspect the connection between the ear pad and ear cup. If you do not know how the attachment mechanism works, do not pull forcefully on the padding or surface material. When fitting the new pad, work evenly around the circumference and check that the rim or frame has engaged at every point. Orient an asymmetrical ear pad correctly and make sure it does not cover controls, sensors, openings, or connectors.

  1. Disconnect the headphones and place them on a clean, stable surface.

  2. Inspect how the original ear pad is attached and remember its orientation.

  3. Release the part using the method intended for the specific design.

  4. Remove dry dirt from the exposed surface without pushing it into any openings.

  5. Fit the new ear pad evenly and without overstretching it.

  6. Check the entire circumference, attachment stability, and matching position on both sides.

Hygiene and regular care

Leave the ear pads to air-dry after use, especially if they have come into contact with sweat or moisture. Wipe the surface with a soft cloth and follow the instructions for the specific material when cleaning more thoroughly. Do not soak the ear pads unless this method is explicitly stated to be suitable, and allow them to dry completely before refitting them.

For hygiene reasons, it is practical not to share personal ear pads between multiple users. If several people use the headphones, consider a separate compatible pair for each person. Store the replacement part in a dry, clean place without compressing it and away from direct heat. Regularly inspect the surface, seams, glued joins, padding, and attachment rim, and replace the ear pad when it no longer stays in place, cannot be adequately cleaned, or causes discomfort.
